Great editorial in the Boston Globe today on new momentum for charter schools in Boston:
Suddenly, support for charter schools, once the lonely province of public-policy entrepreneurs and intrepid, union-defying pols, has become positively mainstream.
For that, you can credit a pro-charter Democratic president, recent Boston Foundation-sponsored research demonstrating their educational efficacy, persistent pressure from both Boston dailies, a developing mayoral race in the Hub - and, oh yes, the myopic resistance to change displayed by the leadership of the Boston Teachers Union.
It’s a bit ironic because at a mayor’s forum in Providence a few years ago on education reform, Mayor Menino blasted charter schools left and right, and talked about the system in terms suggesting protection of a failed system rather than doing what’s best for kids. This week he reversed his position — sort of — and the article in the Globe helps explain why. Will Rhode Island legislators who oppose charter schools like Edith Ajello, Grace Diaz or David Segal similarly change course? Time will tell, but we can hope!
